Allergies- Symptoms & Prevention

19 Apr 2016

Allergy season is still around and sometimes it’s difficult to determine the cause or reason for our discomfort. An allergy is a reaction by our immune system. Individuals who have allergies are sensitive to things in the air around their environment. Some of the substances that often cause reaction include pollen, food, mold spores, insects, medicines, and pets’ dander

Our immune system is our body’s defense system that fights germs. When we have an allergic reaction however, the immune system is responding to a false alarm. Our genes and the environment probably both play a role as well.

Allergies can result in a variety of symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, discomfort, itching, rashes, swelling, or asthma which can all be treated at Preferred Urgent Care.

Allergies can range from minor to severe. Anaphylaxis is a severe reaction that can be life-threatening and we suggest you visit an Emergency room in the case of Anaphylaxis. In order to properly diagnose allergies, a health provider will use skin and blood tests to diagnose allergies. Treatments include medicines, allergy shots, and avoiding the substances that cause the reactions.

Preventing Allergies

  1. Leave your shoes outside the door after been outdoor to prevent pollen picked up on your shoes from getting into the house
  2. Wiping down your pets (dogs and cats) before coming inside the house for those allergens that may have clung to your pets fur.
  3. Wash your hair before going to bed to prevent pollens caught on your hair during the day from rubbing off on your pillow
  4. Close windows and outside doors during high pollen days and turn on the heat or air conditioning. The fresh air feels great but may carry some allergens
  5. Change filter in your furnace and air conditioners as often as recommended by the manufacturer.

Lastly, if you need the attention of a health care provider, please consult your primary care provider. If your primary care doctor is unavailable, please visit Preferred Urgent Care immediate; no appointment necessary.
