Is It Allergies, the Common Cold or the Flu?

We’ve all been there, not knowing whether or not our symptoms were one thing or another, and with this year’s flu season being abnormally excruciating, it can cause a bit of confusion between what you’re feeling and why. Not to mention the spike in allergens this spring, following us into summer, it’s best that we all prepare ourselves to experience not one but probably both of these ailments before the years is over. In order to treat yourself to feel better faster, you have to know how to differentiate the two, and in this article, we will discuss how to do that exactly.

Prevention

There’s never a fool-proof way to avoid getting sick, but there a few things you can do to better your chances of staying healthy. Avoid allergies by taking over the counter anti-histamines. It is wisest to take this medication before your reactions act up, begin in the morning with a non-drowsy form of medication. Stay indoors as much as possible and be sure to change your clothes and shower before hopping into your bed at any point in the day.

Avoid a cold by continuously washing your hands as much as you can all throughout the day. Stay away from people that are sick and try to stay out of the cold and wet weather as much as you possibly can. It is also imperative you keep eating right, get exercise and plenty of sleep.

Avoid the flu by getting your flu shot! It takes about two weeks for the antibodies to develop and do what they are supposed to, so just know it is possible to get sick in the meantime.

Treatment

If you do happen to get the flu or a cold, be ready to get plenty of rest. Relaxing allows your body to naturally recover and fight off whatever is making it sick. Keep eating healthy and be sure to stay really hydrated. The right foods and water can really make a difference.

Time To See A Doctor

  • Trouble breathing or chest pain.
  • Fever.
  • Can’t keep anything down.
  • Hurts to swallow.
