Top 5 Summer Illnesses We’re Seeing in KatyThis Year—and How to Avoid Them

Summer is in full swing in Katy and Fulshear, and families are making the most of the sunshine with pool days, backyard barbecues, splash pad outings, and summer sports. But with the heat and humidity also comes a rise in common summer illnesses that we treat frequently at Preferred Urgent Care.

Here are the top 5 health issues we’re seeing in our clinics this season—and how you can avoid them:

1. Heat Exhaustion & Dehydration

Extreme Texas heat can be dangerous, especially for kids and seniors. Symptoms include fatigue, dizziness, excessive sweating, and nausea. To prevent heat-related illness, stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and avoid peak sun exposure between 12 PM and 4 PM.

2. Swimmer’s Ear

Frequent swimming can lead to moisture trapped in the ear canal, causing irritation and infection. Always dry ears thoroughly after swimming, and avoid inserting cotton swabs which can make things worse. If ear pain or hearing loss occurs, walk in for quick treatment.

3. Insect Bites and Allergic Reactions

Mosquitoes, fire ants, and wasps are everywhere this time of year. Most bites are minor, but some can cause serious allergic reactions. If swelling, redness, or discomfort persists, or if your child is scratching excessively, our providers can help with fast relief.

4. Food Poisoning

Warm weather and outdoor meals can increase the risk of foodborne illnesses. Avoid cross-contamination, refrigerate leftovers promptly, and wash hands frequently. If you’re experiencing vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal cramps, don’t wait—visit us for supportive care.

5. Sunburn

Without proper protection, sunburn can happen quickly. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) every 2 hours and wear hats or sun-protective clothing when outdoors. Severe sunburns with blistering or fever may need medical attention.
