Summer is all about pool days and splash pad adventures—especially in vibrant neighborhoods like Cinco Ranch, Firethorne, Grand Lakes, and Cross Creek Ranch. But while swimming is a favorite way to beat the Texas heat, it can lead to a painful condition known as swimmer’s ear.
At Preferred Urgent Care, we treat patients from across Katy and Fulshear who develop outer ear infections after spending time in the water. The good news? It’s both preventable and treatable—and we’re here to help you enjoy your summer worry-free.
What Is Swimmer’s Ear?
Swimmer’s ear, or otitis externa, is an infection of the outer ear canal caused by trapped moisture, often after swimming in pools, lakes, or splash pads. This creates a perfect environment for bacteria to grow, leading to symptoms like pain, itchiness, and temporary hearing loss.
How to Prevent Swimmer’s Ear in Katy & Fulshear
If you’re enjoying the pools in Cinco Ranch or the water parks in Cross Creek Ranch, use these tips to protect your ears:
- Dry ears thoroughly after swimming using a clean towel. Tilt the head to help water escape.
- Use over-the-counter ear drops (we’re happy to recommend safe brands!).
- Avoid overly chlorinated pools—a strong chemical smell can indicate poor water balance.
