Heat Exhaustion or Heat Stroke? Signs You Should Head to UrgentCare

Summers in Texas are no joke. With temperatures soaring well past 100°F, it’s essential for families in Katy, Fulshear, and the surrounding areas to know the warning signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke—and when to seek medical help.

At Preferred Urgent Care, we regularly treat patients experiencing symptoms of heat-related illness. Understanding the difference between the two can save lives.

What is Heat Exhaustion?

Heat exhaustion is your body’s early warning sign that it’s overheating. Common symptoms include:

  • Heavy sweating
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Muscle cramps
  • Headache
  • Weak, rapid pulse

If caught early, heat exhaustion can usually be treated with rest, hydration, and cooling down. Move to a shaded or air-conditioned space, drink water or electrolyte fluids, and loosen tight clothing.

What is Heat Stroke?

Heat stroke is a medical emergency. It occurs when the body can no longer regulate its internal temperature, and it requires immediate care. Watch for:

  • Confusion or altered mental state
  • Rapid, strong pulse
  • No sweating despite the heat
  • Skin that is hot and dry to the touch
  • Body temperature over 103°F
  • Loss of consciousness

If you suspect heat stroke, call 911 immediately.
